Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, joined by former BJP corporators, has strongly criticized the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for failing to implement essential pre-monsoon safety measures. In a meeting with MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik on Friday, the delegation highlighted serious lapses, particularly the poor upkeep of stormwater drains and rajakaluves ahead of the approaching monsoon.
Kamath noted that under BJP’s administration, monsoon preparedness — including clearing of drains and sewers — would commence as early as March. However, with the Congress-led state government now in power, both the district administration and MCC officials have delayed preventive efforts, even as April ends.
He warned that due to the city’s negligence, several localities witnessed flooding during just light rainfall. “Had the district minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, held a timely review with MCC officials, key works like desilting could have been initiated. His indifference has caused a trickle-down effect — officials too have remained passive,” Kamath said.
Emphasizing the consequences of inaction, Kamath expressed concern over the likely hardships Mangaluru residents could face if the current apathy continues. He accused the Congress government of sidelining the coastal city’s needs and reaffirmed BJP’s commitment to holding authorities accountable.
He announced that a joint meeting between MCC officials and former BJP corporators will be convened within the next few days to ensure urgent action is taken.
Former mayors Diwakar Pandeshwar and Premanand Shetty were also present.
