Mangaluru: MLA Vedavyasa Kamath has urged the Karnataka government to expedite the process of officially renaming Dakshina Kannada district to “Mangalore,” citing cultural pride and global branding benefits.

Speaking during an assembly session, Kamath criticized the delay, noting that the government swiftly approved the renaming of Ramanagara district to “Bangalore South” within two months, while the Dakshina Kannada proposal remains stuck due to a pending report from the Deputy Commissioner. He stressed that the government must actively facilitate the submission of the proposal instead of waiting for it “to come automatically.”

Highlighting the cultural roots of the region, Kamath said Tulu Nadu is believed to have been created by Parashurama, and Mangalore derives its name from Mother Mangalam. “Making Mangalore the district’s official name will strengthen its identity and help create a global brand,” he argued.

Kamath also pointed out that other districts, including Udupi, Hassan, Bengaluru, Tumakuru, and Shivamogga, already share their names with their district headquarters. He added that Uttara Kannada faces a similar situation and could raise a similar demand.

Calling for unity in removing colonial-era names that reflect “a slavery mindset,” the MLA said it was time to embrace names that resonate with local heritage and pride.
