MP Captain Brijesh Chowta has appealed to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu to intervene urgently and halt the proposed closure of the Air India Express crew base at Mangaluru International Airport.

In a detailed letter, Chowta underscored the strategic relevance of the Mangaluru airport, which has been serving the Coastal Malnad and North Kerala regions since 1951. He warned that the closure would not only disrupt operations but also displace over 100 crew and support staff, thereby straining the local workforce.

Chowta further cited the airport’s exceptional on-time performance rate of 90.43% and its capacity to handle over 1,300 tons of cargo, arguing that these metrics reflect its operational significance.

He emphasized that local crew members, familiar with the terrain and systems, contribute to seamless operations—something that would be lost if the base is shut down.

Additionally, he urged the DGCA to consider decentralized crew base models, which, he said, would strengthen India’s aviation network and promote regional balance in operations.
