The highway near Ishwar Nagar’s city municipality pump house has seen a troubling number of accidents recently, with the unscientific design posing risks to motorists. On Sunday alone, two separate cars veered off the road and fell into a roadside drain—one in the morning, another in the evening.
The first accident involved a vehicle carrying tourists from Udupi to Kudremukh, while the second mishap took place later in the day, involving a Tulu stage and movie artiste and co-artistes en route to perform their play, Yerla Guarantee Atth in Hirebettu. Fortunately, all occupants emerged unscathed in both incidents.
These accidents follow a similar event from a few months prior, when a speeding car crashed directly into the pump house, narrowly missing the on-duty staff member sleeping inside. Concerns are mounting as residents point out inadequate road signage and the lack of a protective barrier around the pump house.
Local residents, alarmed by the frequent incidents, are urging authorities to install clear signage directing drivers to the correct routes and to construct safety fences to protect both the pump house and nearby homes from further accidents.
