The Nandini Nadi Samrakshana Samiti, a group of residents from Khandige and nearby villages, has decided to approach the district administration, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to seek updates on measures taken to curb pollution and encroachment in the Nandini River.

Urgent Meeting & Future Plans

The samiti, led by convener Diwakar Samani, has urged MP Brijesh Chowta and MLAs, including Umanath Kotian, to convene a meeting with officials to discuss river rejuvenation. If authorities fail to act, a large-scale protest will be organized.

Pollution & Encroachment Issues

  • MCC commissioner Ravichandra Naik directed an educational institution to remove the waste it had dumped into the river.

  • The process of clearing water hyacinth, which has nearly covered the river, has begun. The samiti has requested additional workers to speed up the cleanup before the monsoon.

  • Legal & Cultural Concerns

The Upa Lokayukta, Justice B Veerappa, initiated a suo motu case against officials for failing to prevent encroachment and pollution near Mukka and Khandige. Pollution even disrupted the traditional temple fishing festival at Sri Kshetra Khandige Dharmarasu Sri Ullaya Daivasthana.
