Mangaluru/Udupi – The all-India strike called by central trade unions on Wednesday, aimed at protesting the central government’s alleged anti-labor, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate policies, had minimal effect across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Daily life remained largely undisturbed, with shops, public transport, and essential services functioning normally in Mangaluru city and nearby taluks. While the strike didn’t disrupt routine activities, symbolic participation was observed from local labor unions and activists.
In Mangaluru, protesters gathered at Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, raising slogans and later holding a public meeting near Clock Tower, criticizing policies they claimed were undermining workers’ rights. At the Old Port Wholesale Market, some workers withheld operations in solidarity.
In Udupi, coordinated demonstrations took place in Kundapur, Byndoor, and Udupi town. Protesters in Udupi assembled near the main post office, submitting a petition addressed to the Prime Minister. At the Ajjarkadu LIC office, members of the Insurance Employees’ Association voiced demands for labor policy reforms.
The protests were peaceful and non-disruptive. Apart from a short road blockade in Mangaluru, the events caused no traffic issues or public disturbances.
Despite the national call for a bandh, normalcy prevailed, and public participation in the coastal region appeared limited, suggesting low traction for the movement in these districts.
