Mangaluru’s markets are bursting with seasonal fruits, as native varieties like jamun (nerale hannu), kokum (punarpuli), and jackfruit dominate the stalls—alongside a sharp spike in both demand and prices.

Jamun, once easily found lying under trees, is now commanding ₹600–₹800 per kg. Kokum follows close behind at ₹400–₹500, with wild jackfruit (Hebbalasu) priced between ₹300 and ₹350. Mangosteen is touching ₹700 per kg, and jackfruit bulbs are selling for ₹400–₹500.

Post Bisu Ugadi, rural farmers begin sending their seasonal produce to urban markets. This year, a scorching summer has intensified the thirst for kokum and jamun, both prized for their cooling and medicinal properties.

Traditionally sourced from Andhra Pradesh, Belagavi, and Vijayapura, jamun shipments are now largely diverted to cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Consequently, Mangaluru’s market is relying on local supplies from regions such as Vamadapadavu, Bajpe, Kinnigoli, Bantwal, Moodbidri, and Udupi. This shift, coupled with a drop in rural yield, has inflated prices to nearly 2–4 times those of past seasons.

Cyril D’Souza, a fruit supplier from Shirthady, notes that labour shortages are also pushing costs up. “Even at ₹800 a day, it’s tough to find help. Harvesting fruits like jamun and jambulan without bruising them is a tricky job,” he said.

Ayurvedic doctor Dr Narayan M from Kaikamba added, “Jamun helps regulate blood sugar, while kokum juice is excellent for summer detox. The health benefits have certainly boosted interest.”
