The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated steps to modernise key national highways along Karnataka’s coastal belt, responding to mounting traffic pressure on roads built over two decades ago.

Feasibility studies are currently underway for upgrading the Kundapura–Talapady, Surathkal–BC Road, and Nantur–Talapady highway stretches. Officials said the tendering process for these feasibility reports is in progress, marking the first step towards large-scale redevelopment.

Cost estimates and scope

According to officials, the proposed upgrade of the Kundapura–Talapady section is estimated to cost around ₹700 crore, while the Surathkal–BC Road project may require an investment of approximately ₹400 crore. The projects aim to expand existing carriageways, add service roads and improve overall traffic safety.

The BC Road–Surathkal four-lane highway, built around 20 years ago, now faces heavy congestion due to increased vehicular movement and the absence of service roads. NHAI plans to widen this stretch to six lanes and construct dedicated service roads to separate local and through traffic.

DPR and new infrastructure plans

Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are being prepared by Dhruva Consultancy, which has been finalised for the Kundapura–Talapady section and may also handle the Surathkal–BC Road stretch. The DPRs will include detailed technical designs, traffic projections and safety assessments.

Plans are also being examined for new flyovers at Brahmavar, Kota, Padubidri and Kallapu along the Talapady–Kundapura stretch. At present, about 25 km of service roads are operational, 13 km are under construction and another 52 km are yet to be taken up.

Safety and future expansion

Officials said the lack of service roads currently forces two-wheelers onto the main carriageway, increasing accident risks. Ensuring safe segregation of traffic is a priority. Importantly, authorities noted that there are no land acquisition hurdles along the Kundapura–Talapady stretch, which is expected to facilitate smooth execution.

The DPR will also explore an elevated highway from Kullur to Nantur, including tunnel provisions for highway traffic while diverting city traffic above, to ensure smoother movement through Mangaluru.
