Himanshu Thapliyal, an alumnus of NITK Surathkal, secures AIR 1 in the prestigious UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2024.
A journey of perseverance and success
National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, celebrates the remarkable achievement of its alumnus, Himanshu Thapliyal, who secured All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2024. A graduate of the MTech program in Nanotechnology (2021–2023), Himanshu’s journey is a testament to resilience and dedication.
Hailing from Uttarakhand and raised in Lucknow, Himanshu’s academic path began modestly, with a JEE rank of 5,83,000. He pursued a BTech in Electronics and Communication at NPSEI, Pithoragarh, and through consistent effort, cracked GATE to join NIT Karnataka for his postgraduate studies.
Aspiring to serve in Indian Telecom Services
Himanshu’s ambition is to join the Indian Telecom Services, and he expressed his commitment to societal contributions:
“With this rank, I can finally achieve that goal. My focus now is on understanding the system and identifying the boundaries within which I can operate. Once I have a clear grasp of these, I aim to give back to society in any way I can.”
Reflecting on his formative years at NITK, he credited the institute for shaping his mindset and opening new avenues:
“NITK provided me with an excellent platform to learn, grow, and meet diverse people. It helped me figure out my path and make the right decisions at the right time.”
Message to aspirants
Himanshu advised UPSC aspirants to maintain a balance between academics and preparation:
“Enjoy every moment at NITK. Participate in events and activities while staying disciplined in your studies. Time management is key.”

Himanshu expressed deep gratitude to his parents, Mrs. Lakshmi and Mr. Shambhu, as well as his mentors, Mrs. Tripti and Mr. Gururaj, for their unwavering support. He also credited his peers and the NITK faculty, particularly Prof. S. Anandhan from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, for their encouragement and guidance.
“This achievement is as much theirs as it is mine,” Himanshu remarked, thanking friends like Kshitij, Debershi, Sanket, and others for their companionship and motivation.
