Mangaluru: Bringing innovation to student living, the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, has introduced Smart Laundry Services in select hostels, marking a shift towards modern, IoT-enabled campus amenities. The service, implemented in collaboration with Haier Smart Solutions, is designed to offer students a convenient, affordable, and self-service laundry option.
The smart laundry setup is currently in a trial phase, operating in four hostels: Everest, Himalaya, Kailash, and Godavari. A total of 25 commercial washing machines, each with a 10 kg load capacity, have been installed. Each wash costs just Rs 30, significantly reducing laundry expenses for students.
Prof. Pushparaj Shetty D, hostel in-charge, explained that the system is backed by the Internet of Things (IoT) and fully app-controlled. Students can reserve, monitor, and make payments for their laundry cycles through a mobile app, eliminating the need for manual tracking or waiting.
Earlier, laundry was managed by external vendors who charged per garment, making it costly for students. The new facility simplifies the process, offers bulk wash options, and promotes self-sufficiency.
The service was officially inaugurated by KV Gangadharan, Dean of Planning and Development, in the presence of Prof. Pavan Kumar, Dean of Student Welfare (in-charge), and other faculty, hostel wardens, and student representatives. A live demo by Vighnesh from Haier Group showcased the system’s functionality and ease of use.
Depending on student feedback, the smart laundry services may soon be expanded to all 16 hostel blocks on campus.
