Mangaluru: The Regional Transport Office here has seen a sharp drop in visitor numbers thanks to digital services on the Parivahan portal, said RTO Shridhar K Mallad during a transport adalat on Monday. The office now processes an average of 500–600 Registration Certificate (RC) smart cards and 300–400 driving licences (DL) daily, with 1.4 lakh smart cards delivered to applicants’ homes over the past year.
With the Parivahan portal offering licence applications, renewals, and other services, most citizens no longer need to visit the RTO in person. Mallad urged vehicle owners to update their mobile numbers in RCs and DLs via the portal to receive timely SMS alerts. The e-challan system, linked to the Command and Control Centre, now sends real-time notifications about traffic violations, fitness and licence expiry, and other updates.
Addressing a participant’s query, the RTO noted that the premises are no longer overcrowded, as over 60% of applications are handled online, and RCs and DLs are sent directly via speed post. The government has approved ₹1.5 crore for RTO office renovation, with work to begin soon under the public works department.
Regarding prepaid autorickshaw counters at Mangaluru railway stations, Mallad said officials have studied similar setups in Palakkad and Mysuru. A rental-related issue for the counters will be resolved shortly to implement the system.
