In Mangaluru, more than 100 Swiggy and Zomato delivery executives have staged a protest demanding higher wages due to rising operational costs. For the past four days, food delivery services have been disrupted as workers voiced their concerns over insufficient earnings, especially in light of soaring petrol prices.
The delivery workers are requesting an increase in their per-delivery rate from Rs. 4-6 to at least Rs. 10 per kilometre. They argue that the current wages fail to meet the growing costs of fuel and the physical demands of their work, making it difficult for them to sustain their livelihood.
As a result of the protest, food delivery operations in Mangaluru have been temporarily halted, though it remains unclear when services will resume. The workers have made it clear that they will continue their protest until their demands for fair compensation are addressed.
This protest reflects growing concerns among delivery executives about the affordability of their jobs amid rising living costs, particularly the high price of fuel. Similar protests have recently taken place in Mumbai, where Swiggy riders protested against changes to rate cards and an increase in delivery radius, highlighting broader issues faced by gig workers in the food delivery industry.
