Mangaluru: Police have arrived at the residence of YouTuber Sameer MD in Bannerghatta to take him into custody, days after civil rights activist Mahesh Shetty Timarodi was detained in connection with the Dharmasthala case.
FIR over provocative video
A case was filed at Dharmasthala police station after Sameer allegedly uploaded a provocative video making claims about the burial of hundreds of bodies in the region. Authorities stated that the video contained derogatory remarks and misinformation, sparking public anger.
Use of AI in controversial content
Investigators allege that Sameer used artificial intelligence tools to create and circulate misleading videos that hurt the sentiments of Hindu devotees. The complainant accused him of deliberately spreading false information to provoke unrest.
Protests demand strict action
Following the circulation of the video, devotees and BJP workers staged protests demanding Sameer’s arrest. They claimed the content had deeply offended crores of devotees associated with Dharmasthala, a revered religious centre in Karnataka.
Multiple complaints filed
In addition to the case registered at Dharmasthala, a separate complaint was recently filed at Kunigal police station, further intensifying the pressure on authorities to act swiftly. Police teams have now moved to detain Sameer for questioning and legal proceedings.
Timarodi’s custody adds to tensions
The development comes shortly after civil rights activist Mahesh Shetty Timarodi was taken into custody in the same case, drawing criticism from some quarters while being welcomed by others who demanded strict measures against those allegedly spreading false narratives.
Conclusion
As police intensify their action, legal experts note that the case highlights the growing challenges of regulating online content, particularly with the use of AI-generated media. Authorities are expected to issue an official statement following Sameer’s detention.
