In response to three recent homicides in Dakshina Kannada, the Karnataka State Police have initiated stringent measures to maintain order, said Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) R. Hitendra during a press briefing in Mangaluru on Wednesday.

After consultations with senior officers in Bantwal and at the Mangaluru Police Commissioner’s office, Mr. Hitendra noted that such a spate of killings had not occurred in the district in the last three years.

The incidents under scrutiny include the mob lynching of Ashraf in Kudupu on April 27, the fatal attack on Suhas Shetty in Bajpe on May 1, and the brutal killing of 32-year-old Abdul Rehman on May 27.

“These acts have been taken very seriously. Beyond standard policing, special interventions have been ordered,” Mr. Hitendra stated, while choosing not to disclose the specifics of these actions.

Efforts are underway to apprehend those involved in Rehman’s murder. The motive, he said, would be understood after interrogating the suspects.

On the digital front, Mr. Hitendra said a dedicated police team is liaising with Meta to flag and remove provocative content from platforms like Instagram and X. The removal process follows established protocols and has already led to several account suspensions.

Recognizing that harmful content may resurface online, authorities are working to identify the individuals behind it and impose strict consequences.

Meetings with SP N. Yathish and Commissioner Anupam Agrawal were part of the day’s high-level strategy discussions.
