Mangaluru: A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Gurunagara near Mary Hill, where a 64-year-old woman tragically lost her life after suffering severe burn injuries during a pooja ceremony at her residence on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Sarojini, a local resident. Her son, 20-year-old Akshay, was also injured in the incident while attempting to rescue her from the flames.

According to police sources, the mishap occurred when Sarojini’s saree accidentally caught fire during the religious ritual. On seeing his mother engulfed in flames, Akshay rushed to her aid and sustained burns in the process. Alerted by the commotion, neighbours quickly came to their assistance and rushed Sarojini to a private hospital in Mangaluru. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.

Police reports indicate that Sarojini had been grappling with psychological distress after the loss of her husband, who was formerly employed as a postmaster.

The Kankanady Town Police have registered a case and are conducting further investigation into the incident.

This tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of fire during domestic rituals and highlights the importance of fire safety at home, especially during the use of lamps or incense.
