Mangaluru: Amid rising tensions in the city, the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 from 6:00 AM on May 2 until 6:00 AM on May 6, 2025. This decision comes as a preventive measure in light of the volatile law and order situation following recent incidents.

Tension grips Mangaluru

Authorities have described the current atmosphere as “a fire smouldering under ashes”, signalling potential unrest and heightened communal sensitivity. In response to the growing concerns over public safety, the City Police Commissioner has invoked prohibitory orders to curb assembly and prevent untoward incidents.

This action also coincides with a Dakshina Kannada district-wide bandh (shutdown) called for May 2, aimed at maintaining peace in the wake of recent developments in the region, including high-profile killings and politically sensitive gatherings.

What is prohibited

The following restrictions will apply during the enforcement period:

  • Gathering of more than 5 people in public spaces

  • Holding protests, rallies, or public meetings

  • Use of loudspeakers or provocative slogans

  • Any activities that could lead to communal tension or disturb peace

Emergency services, hospitals, and essential services are exempt from the restrictions.

Police appeal for cooperation

The Mangaluru City Police has appealed to the general public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Strict action will be taken against those violating the prohibitory orders, and additional police deployment has been made to sensitive areas to ensure stability.

The situation remains under constant monitoring, and the public is advised to avoid spreading rumours or engaging in any activity that could escalate tensions.
