The Dakshina Kannada district administration has failed to rein in the sand mafia, which continues to exploit rivers and threaten livelihoods, alleged CPI(M) district secretary Muneer Katipalla. He criticized officials for allowing rampant illegal sand extraction on Kottarikudru and Gattikudru islands despite the absence of permits. “Unchecked mining is accelerating erosion, endangering both the islands and the families residing there. These islands, rich in Kandla vegetation, are ecologically fragile, yet the authorities have turned a blind eye,” he stated.

Katipalla made these remarks while addressing a protest outside the Department of Mines and Geology office in Mallikatte on Tuesday. The demonstration, led by the Kottarikudru-Gattikudru Island Preservation Committee, saw hundreds of protesters marching from Agnes Junction, chanting slogans against the administration and local representatives.

Roy Castelino, PRO of the Mangalore Diocese and president of the St. Mother Teresa Vichara Vedike, condemned the political and bureaucratic nexus that has allowed years of unchecked sand mining in these environmentally sensitive regions. Struggle committee advisor Sunil Kumar Bajal further alleged that the sand mafia not only extracts illegally but also intimidates residents into silence.

Meanwhile, the Department of Mines and Geology has issued a show-cause notice to senior geologist Krishna Veni for skipping a public grievance hearing chaired by district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. She has been asked to explain her absence within three days or face disciplinary action under Karnataka Civil Service Rules.
