Puttur Town police have detained a 16-year-old male student for allegedly assaulting a female batchmate with a blade on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred as the girl, a I PU student from a government college, was on her way to class. Dakshina Kannada SP Yathish N confirmed that action was taken based on the girl’s statement.
According to the victim, the male student, who is also in I PU but in a different stream, had been following her and expressing romantic interest. When she rebuffed his advances, he allegedly attacked her with a blade-like object, inflicting cuts on her left forearm.
The attack has triggered public outrage, with several people from various organizations gathering at the hospital where the girl is receiving treatment, demanding justice and accusing the college of attempting to cover up the incident.
Police have initiated an investigation and are examining CCTV footage as part of their inquiry.
