Mangaluru: Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai convened a preliminary meeting with officials and residents on Sunday to discuss the establishment of a government medical college, recently approved in the state budget. With 40 acres already earmarked, steps will be taken to launch the institution at the earliest. A detailed project report (DPR) is in progress, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be urged to lay the foundation stone for a 300-bed hospital as part of the first phase.

Rai highlighted that the college fulfills a long-pending demand from the local community, with several organizations advocating for its setup. Despite a five-year delay in the taluk office, he expedited the process by engaging with key government officials. Initially, 20 acres will be utilized for major constructions, while the remaining land will house paramedical and Ayurveda colleges in subsequent phases.

The full-fledged medical college will feature a multi-specialty hospital with over 400 beds. “Our goal is to transform Puttur into a medical hub in stages,” the MLA stated.

The project is expected to drive regional growth. An industrialist has proposed a ₹300 crore investment to establish an industry generating 1,500 jobs, with 25 acres already allocated. Officials confirmed that, per MCI norms, the college must include a hospital with at least 300 beds and facilities for 50 students annually. Infrastructure plans will also cover roads and a new taluk hospital.
