Mangaluru: Rail users from the Puttur-Subrahmanya region have submitted a request to the Divisional Railway Manager of the Mysuru division, urging the relocation and upgrading of Kaniyooru Railway Station to Yeladka. They argue that the current station, serving Kadaba, Sullia taluks, and nearby villages, is situated in a remote and difficult-to-reach location, causing severe inconvenience to passengers.
The lack of a platform, shelter, lighting, and even basic facilities has made the station unusable for many, especially during monsoons or after dark. Elderly citizens, women, and students are among those most affected. Rail users have stressed that Yeladka, located along the Manjeshwar-Puttur-Subrahmanya state highway, would be a far more accessible and central site for a new station.
According to the group, shifting the station would significantly improve accessibility for thousands and contribute to the integrated development of the Kadaba region. They have also appealed for long-distance trains to include the proposed station in their stoppages to ensure the region receives full benefit.
Local residents are preparing a signed petition to support the proposal and have expressed a willingness to assist in the development work. The issue had previously been highlighted by Sullia MLA Bhagirathi Murulya in a letter to MP Capt Brijesh Chowta.
Additionally, commuters requested that the 12685/86 MGR Chennai Central–Mangaluru Central Superfast Express be extended to Subrahmanya Road, citing high demand from students, migrant workers, and pilgrims heading to Tamil Nadu. They also proposed extending the 10107/08 Madgaon–Mangaluru MEMU Express to Kabaka Puttur or Subrahmanya Road, ensuring better use of train rakes and improved service to underserved areas.
