Mangaluru: Unrelenting rains continued to batter Mangaluru and several areas of Dakshina Kannada district, leading to a mudslide near NH-169 at Thiruvail village, close to Vamanjoor. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, forecasting intense rainfall through Monday.

The mudslide deposited large amounts of earth beside the highway. Prompt action by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) ensured the debris was cleared quickly. Traffic was rerouted, and precautionary safety steps were taken. Fortunately, no major damage or injuries occurred.

Across Mangaluru, floodwaters entered numerous homes, worsening the already difficult situation. A retaining wall collapse near Suvarna Lane in Kankanady caused a house’s compound wall and gate to crumble. Similarly, another wall behind an apartment in Shivabhag was destroyed, damaging parts of the building and vehicles.

In Dongarakeri ward near Kudroli temple, Achyuth Shet and Savithri Shet’s home was submerged. Social worker Manjula Nayak blamed poor drainage. Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde intervened, and the city corporation helped drain the water.

Shivanagar in Pandeshwar also faced flooding. MLC Ivan D’Souza visited affected homes and pressed officials to act swiftly.

At Pilikula Nisargadhama, compound walls were damaged, and ten trees uprooted. In Mithabagilu, a tree fell on a bike, injuring two people.

Meanwhile, Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple provided free lunch to flood-affected families. MLA Ashok Rai was seen clearing a roadside drain himself.

All schools and anganwadis in affected taluks of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi remain closed today.
