A comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Central Maritime University in Mangaluru is complete and will soon be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Shipping, announced Member of Parliament Capt Brijesh Chowta.
Speaking at a workshop titled ‘Maritime Universities’, organized by the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) on Friday, Chowta emphasized Mangaluru’s strategic suitability for hosting such a central institution. “There is no more fitting location than Mangaluru for this initiative,” he stated, adding that the proposed university will be named in honor of Rani Abbakka, the warrior queen of coastal Karnataka.
Chowta further highlighted the importance of leveraging Mangaluru’s maritime advantages, particularly in sectors like shipbuilding and repair, to bolster regional economic growth. He underlined the government’s focus on port-led development, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. “With the recent Union Budget introducing a maritime development fund and a shipbuilding cluster, Mangaluru is poised to become a vital player in India’s maritime transformation,” he noted.
In addition, Chowta announced that preparations are in full swing to draft a DPR for enhancing connectivity along the Mangaluru-Bengaluru corridor via Shiradi Ghat. This includes upgrading both road and rail infrastructure, aimed at supporting industrial growth and facilitating smoother logistics.
The proposed university and supporting developments are expected to significantly contribute to India’s journey toward becoming a developed maritime power.
