Mangaluru: In a collaborative effort to promote road safety and ocular health, Father Muller Medical College Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology and the Rotary Club of Mangalore Mid-town jointly conducted a free eye check-up camp for transport professionals on 24 May 2025. The initiative, branded Rotary-Rickshaw, was hosted at the Ophthalmology OPD of Father Muller Medical College Hospital.

The camp’s inaugural session was presided over by Rev Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions. In his address, he stressed the importance of regular health screening for those operating public and private transport, citing its impact on public safety and professional well-being.

  • Rtn. Ralf D’Souza highlighted the societal impact of regular eye screenings for drivers, noting that better vision directly reduces the likelihood of accidents and enhances public safety.

    Commitment to long-term support

    Representatives from local auto and bus driver associations participated in the event, with Mr Thomas, Auto Drivers’ Association representative from Kulshekar, formally receiving the first Free Health Check-up Card. These cards entitle transport workers to free registration and a Father Muller Health Card, valid for one year across hospital services.

    The organisers announced that the eye check-up camp will be held on the fourth Saturday of every month for a year, ensuring sustained outreach to transport workers across Dakshina Kannada.

    Dr Sarita R.J. Lobo, Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, welcomed the attendees, outlining the goals of the programme. The event was compered by Dr Apoorva, ensuring smooth coordination. The initiative marks a significant step in bridging healthcare access for transport professionals, a group often overlooked in preventive health measures.
