Mangaluru: A minor fire-related scare unfolded at the Union Bank branch on Carstreet on Tuesday afternoon, following a short circuit in the help desk area on the first floor of the building.
The situation came to light when thick plumes of smoke were observed rising from the section, triggering immediate alarm. The Pandeshwar fire brigade quickly arrived at the spot and initiated precautionary action.
Since the room was fully air-conditioned and sealed, the smoke could not disperse easily. Firefighters made use of high-powered fans to expel the smoke and restore ventilation to the affected area.
Although the incident did not result in any casualties or injuries, it led to damage of electronic equipment, including several computers and office devices. Fire officials acted swiftly to neutralize the risk and secure the premises.
Bank staff and customers were promptly evacuated as a safety measure. Officials confirmed that the fire did not spread, and the threat was controlled within minutes of arrival.
Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the electrical malfunction, and bank management is assessing the extent of material damage. The branch is expected to resume normal operations shortly after cleanup and repairs.
