Mangaluru — A key meeting of the Dakshina Kannada District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was convened at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Darshan H V.

Addressing the attendees, the DC emphasized that all animal sale outlets in the district must obtain mandatory registration with the SPCA. He issued a firm warning to unregistered pet shop owners, urging them to complete the process within the prescribed timeframe or face legal consequences.

Highlighting the importance of animal welfare, the DC called for strict action against individuals involved in cruelty towards animals. The meeting also discussed a proposal to establish a ‘Prani Mitra’ animal hospital at Bondanthila in Mangaluru taluk, aimed at providing care for stray and injured animals.

Further discussions included the urgent need for animal crematorium facilities in the district to ensure the dignified disposal of animals that die in accidents or due to illness.

Dr Arun Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, shared that ongoing awareness campaigns are being conducted across schools and communities to nurture empathy for animals. He stressed collaboration with various departments to ensure effective enforcement of animal protection laws guided by the Animal Welfare Board.

The meeting was attended by Superintendent of Police Dr Arun K, ACP Geetha Kulkarni, MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik, committee member Suma R Nayak, and other stakeholders.
