On Tuesday, the Baikampady unit of the Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors Association led a protest against the Mangaluru City Corporation’s (MCC) eviction of street vendors using bulldozers. The protest was held in response to the MCC’s action on national highway land not owned by the city.

Addressing the gathering, BK Imthiyaz, honorary president of the association, condemned the MCC’s actions, calling them unlawful and unjust. He highlighted that while poor street vendors were being forcibly evicted, the MCC allowed firecracker sales in areas unsafe due to nearby petroleum and gas pipelines, potentially creating hazardous situations.

Imthiyaz further criticized the MCC for permitting firecracker sales in densely populated areas, warning of the risks involved. He also cautioned that if such illegal operations against street vendors continued, the association would launch an indefinite sit-in protest in front of the MCC zonal office in Surathkal.

Santosh RS, district secretary of the association, along with leaders like Shivappa, Dhananjay Surathkal, Hanif Idya, and others, also voiced their concerns during the protest.
