Mangaluru: In an act of solidarity and service, nearly a dozen private ambulance drivers in Sullia voluntarily took over duties at the government hospital after all Group D employees launched a strike over unpaid salaries.
Responding to an urgent appeal from hospital doctors, members of the Sullia Taluk Private Ambulance Drivers Union stepped in on Sunday. They began helping with patient transfers, ward cleaning, and other essential tasks usually handled by Group D staff.
Union representative Thajuddin Tarly told TOI that the ambulance drivers were compelled to act to prevent disruption in patient care. He emphasized that their support does not overlook the grievances of striking staff. “We urge the health department to release the pending salaries of the Group D employees. If the issue isn’t resolved by Tuesday, we will protest alongside them,” Tarly said.
He noted that Group D workers, hired through a private agency, have not been paid for three months. On Monday, ambulance drivers could be seen clearing waste and performing various duties to maintain hospital operations.
One of the striking employees, Sumesh M, confirmed that around 20 staff members are affected. “We are working on a contractual basis. The agency has cited technical issues for the delay. It would greatly help if the department steps in to release our dues,” he said.
District Health Officer Dr. Thimmaiah HR acknowledged the problem and assured that steps are underway. “I’ve spoken to senior officials and the agency. The salary backlog will be cleared soon,” he stated.
