Dengue cases have spiked significantly in Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts, with DK reporting a doubling of cases compared to last year. As a precautionary measure, Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru has allocated a special ward to handle dengue patients amidst intermittent rains that have created ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.
Situation in Dakshina Kannada (DK)
Currently, DK has recorded 263 dengue cases, with 113 cases within the Mangaluru City Corporation limits. A special 15-bed general ward and an eight-bed ventilator ward at Wenlock Hospital are on standby to manage the situation. Health authorities are closely monitoring the spread of dengue at the taluk level.
Response Measures
The health department is conducting thorough larvae surveys across DK, deploying ASHA workers, multi-purpose workers (MPWs), and local college students to inspect homes and shops. Public awareness campaigns emphasize the importance of weekly cleaning of water containers and elimination of potential mosquito breeding sites like old tires.
Platelet Supply and Treatment
There is no shortage of platelets in DK, ensuring adequate supply in both public and private hospitals. Health officials are vigilant about destroying larvae breeding centers weekly to curb mosquito proliferation.
Udupi District
In Udupi, dengue cases have quadrupled compared to last year, totaling 182 cases so far. While no special ward has been designated, medical treatment is being provided based on case severity. The district hospital and private facilities are actively treating patients, with specific focus on areas like Kundapur and Karkala where cases are concentrated.
Community Measures
Efforts include fogging operations in affected areas like Manipal, Kollur, and Hirebettu, alongside comprehensive awareness drives in schools facilitated by a dedicated task force. The district hospital’s blood bank is well-stocked, and all necessary supportive medications are available despite the absence of specific dengue medicine.
