Violence erupted once more at the Mangaluru district sub-jail on Tuesday afternoon when a fight broke out among undertrial prisoners. Around 2:15 PM, three inmates reportedly attacked two fellow prisoners who were working in the kitchen.

According to jail authorities, Jayanth and Akshith alias Ashwath were engaged in kitchen duties when they were assaulted by Abdul Rehman alias Munni, Umar Siyap, and Mohammed Juraid. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

The assault triggered further chaos as inmates from the ‘B’ Barrack attempted to break out by forcefully damaging their cell gate. As the situation turned tense, senior prison authorities stepped in.

The Chief Superintendent of Prisons from Shivamogga rushed to the scene and, along with jail staff, tried to de-escalate the conflict. However, due to the rising unrest, the Police Control Room was alerted.

A rapid response team including the DCP (Crime), ACP, inspectors, and personnel from Barke Police Station arrived at the sub-jail to manage the situation. Their swift action brought the situation under control before it could spiral further.

Currently, police and prison officials remain stationed inside the facility to ensure stability and prevent further incidents, the prison superintendent confirmed.
