In spite of a red alert issued across Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi, the intensity of rainfall varied across the regions on Wednesday. While Dakshina Kannada was hit with relentless downpours, Udupi saw intermittent showers with less severe consequences.

In DK, persistent rains resulted in waterlogging, infrastructure disruption, and property destruction. Mangaluru received 86.5 mm of rain, while Moodbidri (90.9 mm) and Mulki (96 mm) also recorded significant precipitation. Structural damages included collapsed compound walls, fallen trees, and damaged homes in Bantwal, Beltangady, and Puttur. A total of 60 power poles, a transformer, and three kilometers of cables were impacted.

Conversely, Udupi experienced cloudy skies and moderate showers early in the day, with heavier rain in Kundapur and Byndoor later. The highest rainfall was seen in Brahmavar (152.5 mm) and Udupi town (145.7 mm). Some houses and arecanut farms sustained partial damage, particularly in Kundapur taluk.

Strong gusts, high sea waves, and cooler temperatures added to the challenges in DK. Mangaluru’s maximum temperature dropped to 26.9°C, about 6.4°C lower than usual.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now declared an orange alert for both districts from May 22 to 27, predicting heavy rainfall and intense winds. Rescue teams and boats have been deployed as a precautionary measure.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant, avoid hazardous zones, and follow official weather updates closely.
