Kadaba— In a tragic road mishap on National Highway 75 at Lavathadka near Nelyadi, one person lost his life and more than 18 others were injured when a private passenger bus collided with a stationary lorry early Monday morning.

The ill-fated bus, en route to Bengaluru from Karkala via Dharmasthala, crashed into the rear of a parked lorry carrying a Hitachi excavator. Around 30 passengers were aboard the bus when the incident occurred.

Among the injured, Shankaranarayana Bhat (41) of Padumane, Karkala, succumbed to his injuries while being transported for treatment. At least five individuals sustained critical injuries and were shifted to A J Hospital in Mangaluru, while others were treated at Indian Hospital and Puttur Hospital. The Nelyadi police outpost carried out a site inspection.

Series of Highway Accidents Raise Alarm

This crash follows a similar accident on May 16, when a KSRTC bus heading to Dharmasthala from Bengaluru collided with an oncoming lorry from Mangaluru near Gundya, injuring four. The mishap occurred on a sharp bend, just 100 metres from Gundya town.

The aftermath saw traffic pile-ups stretching up to 10 km, halting movement for nearly two hours, especially affecting pilgrims heading to Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya.

Public frustration peaked when delays in KSRTC’s recovery efforts forced stranded passengers to pool money for a local crane, drawing criticism of the transport body. Nelyadi police intervened to restore normalcy.
