Belthangady: Entry for trekking to Gadayikallu in Belthangady taluk has been prohibited from June 14 following continuous rainfall that has made the route unsafe for visitors. The restriction has been imposed by the Wildlife Division of the Forest Department as a precautionary measure amid increasing risks associated with the monsoon season.

According to Forest Department officials, persistent rain in the region has resulted in slippery terrain, unstable rocks and the possibility of landslides along the trekking route. Considering the safety of visitors, authorities have decided to temporarily suspend trekking activities until conditions improve.

The move comes barely two weeks after trekking was reopened to the public. The department had granted permission for trekking to Gadayikallu from June 1, allowing nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts to once again access one of the region’s popular trekking destinations.

Heavy rainfall prompts restriction

Officials stated that the decision was taken after assessing the condition of the trekking trail and surrounding areas. Continuous rainfall has increased the likelihood of rockfalls and soil erosion, making movement along the route potentially hazardous.

Monsoon-related incidents in hilly and forested areas often pose serious risks to trekkers, prompting authorities to enforce restrictions whenever weather conditions deteriorate. The latest decision is aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring public safety during the ongoing rainy season.

Forest officials have urged visitors and adventure seekers to cooperate with the restrictions and avoid attempting to enter the trekking route without permission. They have also warned that ignoring safety advisories could put lives at risk.

Popular destination sees strong visitor turnout

Since reopening on June 1, Gadayikallu had witnessed a significant increase in visitor numbers. Hundreds of trekkers visited the destination during the first two weeks of the trekking season, attracted by its scenic landscapes and panoramic views.

A particularly large number of visitors reportedly arrived on Sunday, highlighting the growing popularity of the trekking spot among adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. The destination has become a preferred choice for weekend trekkers from different parts of the district and neighbouring regions.

The temporary closure is expected to affect many visitors who had planned monsoon treks to the hill. Several trekking enthusiasts have expressed disappointment over the suspension, especially as the destination had recently reopened after receiving official clearance.

Safety remains top priority

Despite the disappointment among trekkers, authorities have emphasised that public safety remains their primary concern. Forest Department officials noted that weather conditions can change rapidly during the monsoon, increasing the risk of accidents in elevated and forested areas.

The department is expected to continue monitoring rainfall patterns and trail conditions over the coming weeks. Once the intensity of the monsoon reduces and the route is deemed safe, trekking activities may be allowed to resume.

Officials have advised visitors to stay updated through official announcements before planning trips to the destination. They have also encouraged travellers to respect restrictions imposed in ecologically sensitive and weather-affected areas.

The temporary suspension underscores the challenges of managing tourism activities during the monsoon season. While the restriction may inconvenience trekking enthusiasts, authorities maintain that preventive measures are necessary to safeguard lives and avoid potential mishaps.
