Senior government officials gathered on Thursday to honour the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic air crash that occurred at Mangaluru International Airport fifteen years ago.
The district administration hosted a solemn remembrance ceremony at the memorial site in Thannirbavi, built to commemorate the victims of the fatal incident. Acting Deputy Commissioner Dr. Anand, Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation Ravichandra Nayak, Panambur ACP K. Srikanth, and Tahsildar Naveen Kumar were present to pay homage. Each offered floral tributes as a mark of respect for the departed souls.
The ill-fated Air India Express flight had taken off from Dubai and was scheduled to land in Mangaluru early on the morning of May 22, 2010. At approximately 6:20 a.m., the aircraft overshot the runway and plunged into a gorge beyond the table-top airport, leading to one of India’s worst aviation disasters.
Out of the 166 individuals on board, 158 perished in the accident. Owing to the severe impact, the identities of several victims could not be determined. As a result, their last rites were carried out collectively on the banks of the River Phalguni in Kuloor.
To preserve their memory, a dedicated memorial was erected at the site, which continues to serve as a place for reflection and collective mourning for families and citizens alike.
