Mangaluru: In a swift police operation, two men from Assam were arrested within 20 hours of a major burglary that took place in three flats of an apartment in the city. The burglars had stolen gold ornaments, cash, foreign currency, and mobile phones worth around Rs 20 lakh.

Swift action after complaint filed

The theft was reported on Monday, October 20, when a resident, Riyaz Rasheed, filed a complaint at the Urwa police station. According to the complaint, the burglars broke into three flats in the apartment complex and escaped with gold ornaments worth about Rs 20 lakh, Rs 5,000 in cash, 3,000 Dirhams, and a mobile phone.

Senior police officers, including the inspector and staff of Urwa police station, immediately reached the spot, accompanied by the dog squad and fingerprint experts. After collecting evidence, a citywide search was launched to trace the culprits.

Accused caught in Bengaluru

By Tuesday morning (October 21), the team successfully tracked down the suspects in Bengaluru. The arrested have been identified as Abhijit Das (24) and Deba Das (21), both residents of Meherpur Post, Cachar district, Assam.

Police recovered all the stolen items, including gold ornaments, Rs 5,000 in cash, 3,000 Dirhams (worth approximately Rs 70,000), and a mobile phone from their possession.

Accused with prior record

Preliminary investigation revealed that Abhijit Das has a criminal history and was involved in multiple house burglary cases in Bengaluru and Assam. Both accused were produced before the court and have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.

Officials said that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the duo is connected to other burglary cases reported in the region.

Coordinated effort by police team

Under the supervision of the DCP (Crime), the operation was jointly executed by the ACP of the central subdivision, the PI and staff of Urwa police station, and members of the investigation team. The prompt coordination and field efforts of the officers were crucial in ensuring the swift recovery of the stolen valuables and the arrest of the accused.
