Udupi– Continuous and intense rainfall battered Byndoor and Kundapur taluks in Udupi district over the past 24 hours, causing widespread waterlogging, damage to property, and displacement of residents. Though showers slightly weakened by Sunday afternoon, rivers are still flowing at full capacity, inundating low-lying regions.

Between 8:30 AM Saturday and 8:30 AM Sunday, both Byndoor and Kundapur received 21 cm of rain, while the district’s remaining five taluks recorded 11–13 cm, averaging 16.2 cm rainfall overall.

Floodwaters from rivers swollen by Western Ghats runoff entered residential zones. In Byndoor taluk, 11 people from Kambadakone (5), Bijur (3), and Herur (3) were evacuated. According to the District Disaster Management Centre, these individuals are now staying with relatives, avoiding government shelters.

The district administration reported damage to over 30 houses, with losses estimated at over ₹10 lakh. Affected areas include Udupi (1), Kundapur (13), Byndoor (2), Kaup (4), Karkala (3), and Brahmavar (4).

Individual damage cases include:

  • Nagappa Mogaveera’s home in Shirur (Byndoor), hit by a fallen tree – ₹2 lakh loss

  • A partial house collapse in Marli (Byndoor) – over ₹1 lakh damage

  • Gulabi Safaliga’s home in Shirva (Kaup) – ₹1 lakh loss

  • Devuraya Sherigar (Kundapur Kasaba) – ₹80,000 damage

  • Girija Poojarthi (Kumbashi) – ₹60,000

  • Doddanna Poojari (Bola, Karkala) – ₹50,000 due to treefall

  • Cattle sheds of Neelu Poojari (Senapura) and Durga Kulal (Aajri) were destroyed

  • Several other homes suffered losses between ₹10,000 and ₹30,000.

    ⚠️ More heavy rain is predicted across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada on June 17 and 18, with wind speeds expected at 40–50 km/h, as per the India Meteorological Department. Rainfall may taper to moderate levels from June 19.
