N. Arun Padiyar, president of the Kanara Industries Association (KIA), has raised concerns over the annual flooding on the western side of the Baikampady Industrial area due to unscientifically built downstream drains. Despite repeated appeals, no action has been taken by the district administration or elected representatives to resolve the issue.
Padiyar highlighted that the drains, passing through the APMC yard and BPCL, have obstructed water flow, resulting in severe flooding of several industrial units. The main issue lies with the Hume pipes installed under the road by APMC, which are filled with silt, creating critical choke points. This poor design leads to yearly flooding, with the most recent occurrence on Monday causing significant damage.
Among the affected units is Malabar Oxygen, a key oxygen supplier to hospitals. Other impacted businesses include Ajith Enterprises, Durga Motors, JV Springs, Gurudev Plastics, Akolite, Manjunath Rubbers, Rodricks Garage, and various micro, small, and medium enterprises. The rainfall on Monday resulted in an estimated loss of around ₹2 crore.
Despite continuous appeals to the district administration, industries department, MLAs, and the MP for funds to address the drainage issue, no action has been taken. In response, the KIA has voluntarily collected ₹25 lakh from its members and spent it on remedial works over the past two years.
Padiyar calls for immediate and decisive action to prevent recurring losses to MSME units, affecting the livelihood of 20,000 workers. He emphasizes the urgency of protecting the industrial ecosystem of Baikampady.
