Mangaluru: Karnataka Assembly Speaker UT Khader raised serious concerns over the inconsistency in police action in Dakshina Kannada, questioning the absence of a standard operating procedure (SOP) across the district. Addressing reporters on Thursday, Khader announced that he would write to Home Minister G Parameshwara and hold discussions on the issue.

“Despite receiving the same IPS training, why do officers operate differently once posted here?” he asked, pointing out that responses to inflammatory social media content, hate speeches, or assaults vary depending on the officer in charge.

While acknowledging the stricter actions by the new police chiefs of Mangaluru City and Dakshina Kannada, which have reportedly led to a 95% drop in such offenses, Khader stressed the need for consistent enforcement. He demanded a high-level inquiry into previous lapses and failures by the police to contain law and order issues.

Referring to recent incidents, including the murders of Suhas Shetty and Abdul Rahiman, Khader criticized the police for inaction despite warnings of potential retaliatory violence. He condemned those involved in the mob lynching of Ashraf and called for stringent punishment for all perpetrators to break the cycle of revenge killings.

Khader also advocated for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into Rahiman’s murder and Ashraf’s lynching, urging families of the victims to seek central intervention. He emphasized that Dakshina Kannada must rise above vendetta-driven politics to focus on progress and harmony.
