Tragedy struck Karnataka yet again as relentless rains continue to wreak havoc across the state. In the latest incident, a 10-year-old girl named Nayeem lost her life in Mangaluru’s Kanakare area after a compound wall behind her home collapsed early Thursday morning.

The wall, weakened by heavy overnight rain, gave way and sent debris, mud, and a window crashing into the house. Nayeem, who was inside, suffered critical injuries. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed shortly after.

This incident follows a string of similar tragedies across the state, raising alarm about deteriorating infrastructure and the impact of extreme weather. Just four days ago in Belagavi’s Mahalingeshwar Colony, a three-year-old girl, Keerthila Nagesh Poojari, died when a wall collapsed on her while she was sleeping next to her sister, who was injured in the accident.

On May 19, Bengaluru witnessed a comparable disaster. A 35-year-old woman, Shashikala, died instantly when a compound wall crumbled onto her. Officials believe that consistent downpours had weakened the structure. Her grieving family, including her husband and two children, hail from Shahapur in Yadgir district.

In light of these recurring tragedies, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for coastal Karnataka for May 30, forecasting very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. The district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Friday.
