A devastating fire broke out late Thursday night at a residence in Bagambila Vaidyanathanagar, under Kotekar Town Panchayat limits, completely destroying the home and valuables, including sarees and items prepared for a wedding scheduled the next day.
The house, owned by Sushila Madivalti, was unoccupied during the incident as she, her husband Janardhan, daughter Asha, and sister Meera were attending a relative’s Mehendi ceremony nearby. Upon their return, Sushila discovered the house engulfed in flames and quickly raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to assist and heroically removed gas cylinders from the home, averting a possible explosion.
Despite their efforts, the fire spread rapidly. Firefighters eventually brought it under control, but by then, essential household items—including a refrigerator, television, fan, grinder, clothing, and wedding sarees—had been reduced to ashes.
The family is in a state of shock and deep financial distress. Janardhan, a daily wage worker, and daughter Asha, who is employed at a nearby medical college, are the sole breadwinners. Sushila and her sister Meera are homemakers and dependent on the duo’s income. The loss of possessions just before a family wedding has further intensified their emotional and financial burden.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.
