Mangaluru: World Cancer Day was solemnly commemorated at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH), reaffirming solidarity with cancer patients and survivors while highlighting the importance of prevention, early detection and timely treatment. Observed globally on February 4, World Cancer Day serves as a collective call to action to reduce the cancer burden and support those affected by the disease.
‘United by Unique’ theme highlighted
The World Cancer Day 2026 theme, “United by Unique,” emphasises that every cancer journey is distinct, yet humanity stands united in the fight against the disease. Reflecting this spirit, the Father Muller Oncology Centre (FMOC) organised a meaningful inauguration of its World Cancer Day commemorative activities at the front grounds of the Asha Kiran Block.
The event brought together management members, faculty, students, patients and well-wishers, creating a shared space of compassion, awareness and commitment.
Call for collective responsibility
Presiding over the programme, Rev. Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, stressed that cancer impacts not only individuals but also their families and caregivers. He underlined that restoring normalcy requires collective effort through medical care, emotional support and social responsibility. Drawing attention to rising pollution levels and food adulteration, he urged greater environmental consciousness to help prevent lifestyle-related diseases, including cancer.
Students spread hope through performance
Adding vibrancy and inspiration to the event, students from the Department of Hospital Administration, Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences, and the Father Muller College of Physiotherapy presented a spirited flash mob. Their performance conveyed powerful messages of resilience, strength and hope, reinforcing the belief that cancer can be fought and overcome.
Awareness initiatives unveiled
A commemorative video featuring FMOC management and faculty was screened, echoing the theme “United by Unique” and reaffirming the institution’s commitment to compassionate cancer care. Participants wore purple ribbons as a symbol of awareness and solidarity.
The Departments of Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Radiotherapy, along with the Departments of Community Medicine and Hospital Administration, unveiled banners detailing the activities planned as part of the World Cancer Day observance. Drop-down banners were also displayed to engage and inform the public.
