Mangaluru: Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte, observed World Health Day 2026 with an awareness programme centred around this year’s global theme, “Together for health, stand with science.” The initiative aimed to highlight the importance of scientific approaches in healthcare while addressing pressing global concerns such as antimicrobial resistance.

The programme was conducted at the EMD Auditorium of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital and witnessed active participation from healthcare professionals, administrative staff, and members of various departments. The event served as a platform to educate and sensitise attendees about the rational use of medicines and the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding public health.

Awareness on antimicrobial resistance
A key highlight of the programme was an awareness talk delivered by Dr. V. K. Vineeth, Assistant Professor in General Medicine and Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital. His session, titled “The more we use, the more we lose: ID perspectives on antimicrobials,” focused on the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Dr. Vineeth emphasised that antimicrobial resistance is emerging as a serious global health concern, largely driven by the irrational and excessive use of antibiotics. He explained how misuse of antimicrobials in both clinical and community settings is leading to reduced effectiveness of life-saving drugs, making infections harder to treat.
He urged healthcare professionals to adopt evidence-based practices while prescribing antibiotics and called upon the public to avoid self-medication. Stressing the importance of awareness, he noted that combating AMR requires coordinated efforts from doctors, patients, policymakers, and the community at large.
Participation from healthcare teams
The programme saw the participation of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, paramedical staff, hospital administration members, the marketing team, and representatives from the social work department. Their presence reflected a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare awareness and reinforced the importance of teamwork in addressing public health challenges.
Dr. Habib Rahaman A. A., Medical Superintendent of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, along with the administrative team, was present at the event and extended full support to the initiative. Their involvement highlighted the institution’s commitment to promoting health awareness and community engagement.
The programme was compered by Ms. Niliesha Melita Carvallo, Assistant Hospital Operations Officer, who ensured the smooth flow of the event.
Free health screening for the public
To mark the occasion of World Health Day, the hospital also organised a series of free health screening services for visitors and the general public. These included blood sugar estimation, blood pressure measurement, bone mineral density testing, body mass index (BMI) evaluation, and diet consultation.

The initiative received an encouraging response, with around 250 participants benefiting from the free screenings and expert consultations. The activity not only promoted preventive healthcare but also enabled early detection of potential health issues among the participants.
Healthcare professionals provided guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing chronic conditions, and adopting balanced dietary habits. The free services were particularly appreciated by members of the public, as they made essential health checks accessible without financial burden.
Promoting science-based healthcare
The observance of World Health Day at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital reinforced the importance of science-driven healthcare practices. By focusing on antimicrobial resistance and preventive health measures, the programme aligned with global efforts to strengthen healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes.
The hospital’s initiative demonstrated how awareness programmes, combined with community outreach activities, can play a crucial role in educating the public and encouraging responsible health behaviours.
As healthcare challenges continue to evolve, such initiatives serve as a reminder that collective action, guided by science and informed decision-making, is essential to building a healthier society.
