Mangaluru: Rainfall intensity reduced across Dakshina Kannada on Wednesday, bringing temporary relief after days of heavy downpours, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) continued to caution residents by issuing a yellow alert for the district from August 6 to 8. While most parts of the district experienced only light to moderate showers, authorities remained on alert as the forecast indicated widespread rainfall and strong winds over the coming days.

Light to moderate rainfall across the district

Several parts of Dakshina Kannada recorded moderate rainfall during the day. Showers were reported from Karaya, Kalleri, Puttur, Uppinangady, Madanthyaru, Kokkada, Venur, Nelyadi, Guruvayanakere, Dharmasthala, Kadaba, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Bellare, Panja, Kalmakaru, Moodbidri, Mulki, Panambur, Ullal, Bajpe, Vitla, Kanyan, Peruvai and Mangaluru.

In Mangaluru city, residents witnessed intermittent light rain accompanied by cloudy skies. Brief spells of sunshine appeared between showers, indicating a temporary reduction in the intensity of the monsoon over the coastal district.

Although rainfall eased compared to previous days, officials continued to monitor vulnerable areas as saturated soil and unstable hill slopes remain a concern following continuous monsoon showers.

Landslide destroys house in Gurupur

Despite the reduced rainfall, rain-related damage continued to be reported from different parts of the district.

A landslide at Annebail in Gurupur village of Mangaluru taluk completely destroyed a residential house. Fortunately, the occupants had vacated the building before the landslide occurred, preventing any injuries or loss of life.

Two neighbouring houses have also come under threat due to the unstable slope, prompting concern among local residents.

Officials, including the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO), Village Accountant and an engineer, visited the site to assess the damage. After inspection, they submitted a report to the district administration declaring the affected house unfit for habitation and recommended that compensation be provided to the family.

Road clearing begins at Kettikal

Restoration work also gathered pace at Kettikal, where a landslide on Tuesday had blocked the road after depositing massive boulders and large quantities of mud and debris.

Authorities initiated clearing operations on Wednesday to remove the debris and restore traffic movement. Machinery was pressed into service to clear the affected stretch, while officials continued monitoring the area for further slope movement.

The district administration has urged motorists to remain cautious while travelling through vulnerable stretches during the ongoing monsoon.

IMD issues yellow alert until August 8

According to the IMD, Dakshina Kannada will remain under a yellow alert from August 6 to 8 due to the possibility of widespread rainfall across the district.

The weather department has also forecast strong winds along the Karnataka coast on August 7 and 8. Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 kmph and 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph in coastal areas.

Authorities have advised fishermen, residents and commuters to stay updated with weather advisories and exercise caution during periods of strong winds and rain.

Khader to inspect rain-hit areas

Health Minister U T Khader is scheduled to visit rain-affected areas in Sullia, Kadaba and Mulki on Thursday.

During the visit, the minister will inspect locations impacted by heavy rainfall and landslides. He is also expected to hold review meetings with district officials to assess relief operations, rehabilitation measures and the progress of restoration works in affected villages.

The visit comes as the district administration continues to respond to monsoon-related incidents reported across Dakshina Kannada.

Udupi records widespread rainfall

Neighbouring Udupi district also experienced widespread rainfall on Wednesday morning before the weather turned cloudy later in the day.

Heavy rain was reported from rural areas of Kundapur and Byndoor taluks, leading to waterlogging in some low-lying locations. Moderate showers were later recorded in Udupi, Manipal, Hiriyadka, Malpe, Katapady, Uchila, Brahmavar, Kaup, Kundapur, Hebri and Karkala.

In Anagalli village of Kundapur taluk, a house belonging to Gulabi Shetty sustained partial damage due to strong winds and rain on Tuesday. Officials estimated the loss at around Rs 1 lakh.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Udupi district on August 6, urging residents to remain vigilant as unsettled weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.

Authorities remain on alert

Although rainfall intensity has reduced across Dakshina Kannada, officials continue to monitor vulnerable locations due to the possibility of fresh spells of rain and strong winds. With landslides, house damage and waterlogging still posing risks in several areas, the district administration has advised the public to remain cautious and follow official weather advisories until conditions improve.
