Mangaluru: In celebration of the International Day of Yoga 2025, Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital, Naringana, hosted a seminar and workshop titled “Yoga for Mental Health” under the banner of ‘Yoga Samavesh’, in association with the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy, New Delhi, and the Ministry of Ayush.

Dignified inauguration and thoughtful addresses

The programme began with a prayer by second-year BNYS students, followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp by dignitaries. Dr Padmashree, the programme coordinator, welcomed the gathering with insightful opening remarks that set the tone for the event.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr Anil Kakunje, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Yenepoya Medical College, who illuminated the audience on contemporary psychiatric challenges and society’s evolving attitudes towards mental health issues.

Expert insights on yoga and mental wellbeing

Dr Mohammad Rafiq, Chief Medical Officer at Beach Healing Home, Hoode, Udupi, and a senior naturopathy and yoga physician, highlighted the importance of integrating yoga into daily life for improved mental wellness.

Dr Soumya Mahesh Pandith, Professor and Head of the Yoga Department at CARE Yoga and Naturopathy Medical College, Guntur, elaborated on the eight essential yogic practices, explaining how they offer practical ways to regulate mental states and promote calmness in day-to-day challenges.

The Guest of Honour, Mrs Renuka, Supervisor at the Women and Child Development Department, Vitla, shed light on workplace stressors faced by women, calling for more inclusive support systems that include yoga-based interventions.

Emphasising yoga’s role in mental health

Dr Puneeth Raghavendra K R, Principal of Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College, delivered the Chairperson’s Address, stressing the profound relevance of yoga in fostering mental health resilience in modern society. He reinforced that regular yoga practice enhances both emotional balance and cognitive clarity.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Abhijna, Assistant Professor at the college, followed by the distribution of mementoes to all resource persons and guests as a token of appreciation.

Finally, Dr Padmashree conducted a practical Yoga Protocol session tailored for mental health, which was actively participated in by camp attendees.
