Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, located in Kodialbail, Mangalore, achieved a significant milestone on June 30, 2024, by successfully conducting the first-ever Episealer Knee Implant surgery in South India. Led by Dr. Deepak Rai, Chief Robotic Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy Surgeon, and assisted by Prof. Leif Ryd, founder of Episurf Medical AB, this groundbreaking surgery marks a new era in orthopedic treatment.

During a press conference at the Mangaluru Press Club, Dr. Rai explained that the knee joint, being the largest in the body, connects the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and patella (kneecap). It functions as a weight-bearing joint crucial for movement, supported by cartilage that absorbs shocks and reduces friction.

The Episealer Knee Implant is specifically designed for treating focal osteochondral defects and early osteoarthritis lesions. Dr. Rai highlighted that the implant’s individualized design is based on MRI imaging, creating a virtual 3D model to precisely define and address the damaged knee surface. This approach aims to restore knee function, alleviate pain significantly, and potentially delay or prevent the need for more invasive joint replacement surgeries.

The implant itself, made from cobalt-chrome alloy with titanium and hydroxyapatite coatings, ensures secure fixation to the bone, promoting long-term stability and durability. Mr. Mohan Nair, Managing Director of Episurf India Pvt. Ltd., emphasized their commitment to enhancing the quality of life for patients with joint injuries through advanced, minimally invasive treatment options.
