Matsyagandha Express soon to be more comfortable and luxurious
Mangaluru: The Matsyagandha Express, a crucial rail service linking coastal Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, has been modernized with advanced Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, significantly improving passenger safety and travel comfort. The upgraded coaches were officially launched on Monday, February 17, at Indrali Railway Station by Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary.
Operating as Train No. 12619/12620, the Matsyagandha Superfast Express connects Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Kurla, Mumbai) and Mangaluru Central daily. Widely regarded as Mangaluru’s railway lifeline, this train plays a vital role in long-distance travel for thousands of commuters.
Originally introduced as the Mangalore-Kurla Express on May 1, 1998, the train runs through one of India’s most picturesque yet challenging railway corridors—the Konkan Railway route. On August 30, 2021, a special Matsyagandha Express service (Train No. 02619) became the first train to operate on the newly developed Roha-Veer double line, further enhancing efficiency on this stretch.
Now, with the latest transformation, the train has transitioned from its older Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches to state-of-the-art LHB coaches. This upgrade promises smoother rides, enhanced safety, and improved durability. The revamped rake commenced service from Mangaluru Central on February 17, 2025, and from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Mumbai, on February 18, 2025.
This modernization marks a new chapter for the iconic Matsyagandha Express, ensuring a more secure and comfortable journey for passengers.
