Metro and autos now cost almost the same in Bengaluru
A Bengaluru resident’s fare comparison between metro and auto rides has ignited a fresh debate on public transport costs. The viral post revealed that traveling from Malleshwaram to Yelachenahalli via metro for three people costs ₹180, while an auto ride for the same route is priced at ₹210.
Online users had mixed reactions, with some arguing that last-mile transport costs could make metro travel even more expensive. A user pointed out that after adding the expense of reaching the metro station, the total fare might exceed ₹210.
Many commuters urged the state government to collaborate with auto unions to increase the adoption of electric autos, which offer lower fares and environmental benefits.
While some commuters defended the metro’s reliability, citing its air-conditioned coaches, security, and punctuality, others felt the pricing needed revision. A user remarked, “Metro is quick and safe, but three people in an auto for long distances isn’t exactly comfortable.”
Despite metro’s speed advantage, its ridership has fallen sharply following a fare increase of up to 71% on February 9. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) reported a drop of 2.3 lakh daily passengers, with revenue failing to improve as expected.
