Monsoon Arrives with Fury: Heavy Rains Batter Mangaluru, Trees Uprooted
With the southwest monsoon officially hitting the Karnataka coast, Mangaluru and surrounding rural areas witnessed intense rainfall and strong winds on Saturday, leading to disruptions and minor damages across the region.
From early morning, skies turned overcast, and gusty winds brought continuous downpours. Near Landlinks in Derebail, a large tree uprooted by the wind fell across the road, briefly halting traffic. Authorities responded swiftly, clearing the blockage and restoring movement.
Later in the day, multiple trees were uprooted in the Ladyhill area, damaging vehicles including a bus and a car, and causing major traffic delays. Emergency teams reached the site and began restoration work.
Several other areas reported flooding, tree falls, and wind-related damages. MLC Ivan D’Souza instructed officials to implement relief measures in flood-prone zones. Within the Mangaluru City Corporation limits, several homes experienced waterlogging, prompting appeals for immediate assistance.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather alert for coastal and Malnad districts, warning of rain with wind speeds reaching 40–50 kmph. Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga have been placed under watch. Residents were urged to exercise caution, particularly at night.
In Udupi, rain has intensified, with authorities closely monitoring low-lying and river-adjacent areas to prevent flooding risks.
With pre-monsoon showers gaining strength, district administrations remain on high alert, coordinating efforts to address emergencies and mitigate impact.
