Mangaluru: The cardiac surgical team of Yenepoya Specialty Hospital (YSH) recently performed a successful complicated heart surgery on a patient with ventricular septal rupture (VSR).
VSR is a dreaded complication that occurs after a heart attack (MI), in which the wall separating the two muscular chambers (ventricles) of the heart ruptures. VSR may develop within 1-14 days post-MI, however, it usually occurs within the first 24 hrs or 3 to 5 days post-MI. It occurs in 3% of patients with MI. This condition carries a very high mortality. 75% of patients die without surgical intervention. Emergency surgery remains the gold standard treatment for post-MI VSR.
A 50-year-old male patient was admitted to Yenepoya Specialty Hospital four weeks after the diagnosis of VSR as he was refused surgery in Bangalore and Shimoga. He was in pre-renal failure with bedsore as he was bedbound for 3 weeks. After basic evaluation, the surgery was performed on the patient by the Cardiac Surgical team led by Dr Sakthivel (Cardiothoracic surgeon), Dr Ganesh Kamath (Cardiothoracic surgeon) and Cardiac Anaesthesiologists Dr Mohandas, Dr Krishnaprasad and Dr Vinayak. After intensive management and care in the post-surgical unit (ITU) by an expert team of doctors, Perfusionist and nursing staff the patient was discharged in stable condition. The patient is now able to climb one flight of stairs and walk for 15 minutes without any difficulty and his kidney and other organ functions are normal. This is the fourth successful VSR closure performed by the Yenepoya Cardiac surgery team. The same team had also successfully performed Coronary endarterectomy, Aortic aneurysm surgery like Bentall, Aortic valve-sparing Aortic root replacement (David), Total arch replacement, left ventricular aneurysm surgery, Aortic and mitral valve repair with good results.
“The management of such high-risk surgical cases requires a highly skilled team of doctors and supporting staff. YSH is equipped with state of the art facilities and expertise to perform all kinds of Cardiac surgeries and is providing quality care to patients from different parts of Karnataka and Kerala. In our constant endeavour to provide state of the art care, soon Minimal invasive Cardiac Surgery and Robotic surgery will be started,” added Dr Mohammed Thahir, Medical Director, Yenepoya Specialty Hospital.
