Mysuru, Karnataka: Booker Prize 2025 winner and noted Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq will inaugurate the world-famous Mysore Dasara festivities on September 22 atop Chamundi Hill, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced in Bengaluru on Friday.
Official announcement
The inauguration marks the commencement of the 11-day cultural extravaganza, which will conclude with the grand Jumbo Savari procession on October 2. Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister stated that Mysuru District Administration would formally invite Mushtaq to do the honours.
“The high-level committee on Mysore Dasara entrusted me with the responsibility of selecting a dignitary for this year’s inauguration. I am happy to announce that Banu Mushtaq, who has made remarkable contributions to literature and social causes, will preside over the opening ceremony,” Siddaramaiah said.
A progressive voice
The Chief Minister lauded Mushtaq as a writer deeply engaged in farmers’ struggles and an advocate for the Kannada language. “She is a woman with a progressive mindset and a strong voice for social justice,” he remarked.
Mushtaq’s recognition with the Booker Prize earlier this year has placed her in the spotlight, making her an inspiring choice to lead the festivities that celebrate Karnataka’s rich heritage.
Air show to be added attraction
Adding to the grandeur, an air show has been planned for the first time in several years. Siddaramaiah revealed that Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had approved the proposal.
“A letter has been sent to the Defence Minister inviting him to witness the celebrations in Mysuru. The inclusion of an air show will add a spectacular element to the traditional events,” he stated.
Festivities schedule
The Mysore Dasara festivities, often referred to as Naada Habba (State Festival), will feature cultural performances, processions, exhibitions, and illumination of the Mysore Palace. The grand finale, the Jumbo Savari, will see caparisoned elephants march through a 5-km route in the heart of the city.
Hotels and homestays in Mysuru are already witnessing high bookings, with the state government expecting a surge in domestic and international tourists during the 11-day celebration.
Significance of the event
The Dasara festival symbolises the triumph of good over evil and has been celebrated with grandeur since the era of the Wodeyars. The selection of an acclaimed writer for the inauguration highlights the fusion of tradition and modern cultural achievements.
Conclusion
With Banu Mushtaq set to flag off the celebrations, and the inclusion of a spectacular air show, Mysore Dasara 2025 promises to be a historic and memorable affair.
