Mysuru: The centenary celebrations of the sacred relic of St. Philomena was held at St. Philomena’s Church in Mysuru city on August 11, marking 100 years since the relic was brought to the city.
Relic brought to Mysuru in 1926
The sacred relic was brought to Mysuru in 1926 and handed over to T. Thumboo Chetty, the then Huzur Secretary of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, by Archbishop Peter Pisani, Apostolic Delegate of the East Indies.
Following its arrival, the relic soon began attracting pilgrims in large numbers. Devotees visited the site seeking the intercession of St. Philomena, gradually giving the relic a special place in the spiritual life of the region.
A cherished pilgrimage centre
Within a short period, a beautifully crafted statue of St. Philomena, specially brought from France, was installed near the sacred relic.
The presence of the relic and the statue helped establish St. Philomena’s Church as a significant pilgrimage destination, drawing devotees from different parts of the region.
